1950'S

"Ain't nothing but a hound dog" was barely heard through a crowd of wild teenagers of the 1950's listening to their teen idol, Elvis! This teen idol was perfect for this crowd of teens. Teenagers in the fifties wanted to be different and alike at the same time. They wanted to be cool, but "different". This is why  Elvis was perfect for them. Rock and Roll was brought into the world at this time and most parents thought it was unsuitable for a family audience. The teenagers loved him though, they thought he was the greatest thing on Earth. The 1950's was a very exciting decade and it still is. It was a time of happiness, individuality,  and plain old fun. In the 1930's the Great Depression became a worldwide business slump that affected almost all the nations. Although, this decade was deeply influenced by the depression many great inventions and progressions for the U.S. still occurred at this time.

1930's Fashion

Generally fashions of the 1930s are thought of as glamorous and sensuous. This is the era of the big bands, dancing and night life.

The dresses are long and elegant, evening gowns were often backless and importantly there develops a very distinct difference between daywear and evening wear. This example to the left is President Hoover, and his date in 1931. 

1920's

This week, the 1920's, I thought I'd mix up the blog by giving you some quick information about the 1920's and then showing you some interesting advertisements I found from this decade!! In the 1920's women were finally allowed to vote in the US, the Lie Detector Test was invented, Time Magazine was founded, the first Olympic Games were played, Hitler published "Mein Kampf", flapper dresses were very popular, Houdini dies after being punched, a woman swam the English Channel, Babe Ruth makes the home-run record, bubble gum was invented, the first mickey mouse cartoon aired on television, penicillin was invented, car radio invented, and finally the first Academy Awards!! The 20's were a raging time for the U.S. full of progress, and a great decade of moving forward!! Now here are some of my favorite advertisements that I found from this time period....

 

1910's

The 1910's was an exciting decade full of entertainment, science, technology, fads and many more! Popular interests in the 1910 decade was going to the movies, the dance craze called the Tango, and The Saturday Evening Post. Also, Picasso and Matisse began to be widely appreciated for their abstract art work. But then in 1912 disaster struck, the sinking of the Titanic.

1910-1919 Fashion

Women's fashion industry expanded dramatically after the invention of the sewing machine in the mi-19th century. By 1910, the trend towards looser, lighter clothing picked up during this time compared to the tight form from the 1900 decade before. Men's clothing and fashion trends changed very little from the previous decades. They stuck to preferred military looks, and bowler hats.
